Istanbul

June 8th through 12th, 2011

Istanbul is East meets West at its best (as you may have noticed, I'm a huge fan of this juxtaposition).  So much history and so much life: people are much more convivial here than they were in Athens.

the hagia sofia
inside. dizzy yet?
More pictures after the jump!

left, a holy mosaic; right, architectural marvel that is the hagia sofia
the blue mosque

As you can see from the shot inside the Hagia Sofia, the ceilings of domes are decorated very ornately.  Fantastic visual inspiration!

wall tiles at the topkapi palace
more of the topkapi palace. left, me being artsy fartsy; right, tall arches

What made me love Turkey even more: they have an appreciation for random words I make up!   Darty is a huge chain electronics store, kinda like Best Buy.  But doesn't "darty" just make you want to shop there even more?
i still claim ownership to having come up with day + party = darty.
these guys have the right idea

And of course there have to be pictures of food.  It's not a proper trip without :)
pistachio baklava + turkish tea = divine afternoon break
cacik (yogurt and cucumber), bean soup, and lots bread. yum.
 resist licking your screen.
